1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 351, Local Government
1212 Code, is amended by adding Section 351.045 to read as follows:
1313 Sec. 351.045. EMPLOYMENT OF HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS IN
1414 CERTAIN COUNTIES. (a) The commissioners court of a county with a
1515 population of 3.3 million or more may appoint, contract for, or
1616 employ licensed physicians, dentists, or other health care
1717 providers to provide health care services to inmates in the custody
1818 of the sheriff.
1919 (b) This section may not be construed as authorizing a
2020 commissioners court to supervise or control the practice of
2121 medicine as prohibited by Subtitle B, Title 3, Occupations Code, or
2222 to supervise or control the practice of dentistry as prohibited by
2323 Subtitle D, Title 3, Occupations Code.
2424 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2525 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2626 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2727 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2828 Act takes effect September 1, 2011.
