S.C.R. No. 28 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Dr. Joe E. Gonzales, who is serving his final year as principal of Austin Can! Academy, an open enrollment, dropout recovery charter high school serving at-risk students in Travis County; and WHEREAS, Since Dr. Gonzales began serving as principal of Austin Can! Academy in July of 2007, the school has moved consistently in a positive direction; enrollment increased from 88 students to 415; attendance rates increased from 70 to 87 percent, and graduation rates increased three years in a row; and WHEREAS, The academy's college readiness program has also seen substantial increases in the number of students enrolled in college and in the amount of financial aid they receive; and WHEREAS, Dr. Gonzales earned a doctorate in education from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, in 1990, and he has served with distinction as a superintendent of schools in Texas and Michigan for more than 12 years; throughout his highly successful career in education, Dr. Gonzales has also been a leader in civic and academic associations, and he has received numerous awards and commendations for his many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas hereby commend Dr. Joe E. Gonzales for his outstanding career in education and for his many contributions to the success of Austin Can!
