SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1041
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Alice High School Academic Decathlon team, which
recently won the 2011 national championship; and
WHEREAS, The team from Alice High School won the Medium
School Online Competition by amassing 32,329 points, defeating
its closest competitor, California's Hallmark Charter School, by
122 points; and
WHEREAS, Alice High School drew on the strength of its
Super Quiz Team to move through regional and state tournaments,
and it is the first Title I school to advance to the national
tournament; and
WHEREAS, These young scholars have demonstrated great
focus and perseverance over the course of the school year; team
members Leandra Barrett, Cecilia Eberhard, Andres Elizondo,
Franz Puyol, Michael Galvan, Romali Kamat, Jon-Mychal Thompson,
Nelson Smithwick, and Johnny Gutierrez can take great pride in
their outstanding performance; and
WHEREAS, Under the outstanding leadership and guidance of
their coach, Dr. Joseph Eberhard, they have developed exemplary
study habits, discipline, and concentration; Alice High School
and the people of South Texas are proud of the team for their hard
work and their outstanding skills; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
Legislature, hereby commend the Alice High School Academic
Decathlon team on its successful year and extend congratulations
on winning the 2011 national championship title; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the team as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
