SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 118 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the citizens of the Rio Grande Valley and Texans across the state in celebrating January 27, 2011, as The University of Texas--Pan American Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, The University of Texas--Pan American was founded in 1927 as Edinburg College; it was renamed Pan American College in 1964 as a reflection of its mission to bridge the cultures of North and South America and to mirror the school's cultural and ethnic diversity; it joined The University of Texas System in 1989; and WHEREAS, Today, The University of Texas--Pan American is one of the leading institutions of higher education in the nation; it has been named by Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine as one of the top 100 colleges in the nation for Hispanics, ranking in the top five in the number of bachelor's and master's degrees awarded to Hispanics; it is one of only six universities in Texas named to the Forbes top 100 list of America's Best Public Colleges; and WHEREAS, In addition to its outstanding academic offerings, the university offers a wide array of extracurricular activities; its internationally renowned mariachi program has won more than 10 first-place awards at national competitions; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of The University of Texas--Pan American on their many valuable contributions to our state and extend to them best wishes for a memorable celebration of The University of Texas--Pan American Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the university as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
