SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1193 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Alelhie "Lila" Valencia, who is receiving her doctorate from the College of Public Policy at The University of Texas at San Antonio; and WHEREAS, A native of Brownsville, Lila has followed her dreams and broken through the cycle of poverty to become the first person in her family to graduate from college; she earned a bachelor's degree from The University of Texas at Austin and went on to receive a master's degree from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia; and WHEREAS, Inspired by the Howard Dean campaign, Lila became increasingly involved in her community as a political and social activist; in addition to her exemplary work with the Howard Dean campaign, she served as the field coordinator for the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project and helped more than 3,200 Travis County residents register to vote; and WHEREAS, Lila played an important role in the founding of Latinos for Texas, a voter education initiative that worked for numerous successful candidates across the state, including Julian Castro, Ciro Rodriguez, Juan Garcia, and Diana Maldonado; she served as a precinct organizer for the Hillary Clinton campaign and was a delegate to the 2008 Travis County Democratic Convention; and WHEREAS, An inspiration to her large and loving extended family, Lila earned her doctorate in applied demography while maintaining her efforts in the fight for social justice and equality; she is truly deserving of recognition for her hard work and determination; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby commend Alelhie "Lila" Valencia on her many outstanding achievements and extend to her congratulations on receiving her doctorate from The University of Texas at San Antonio; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
