SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 137 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay tribute to Willie Mae Kirk on the special occasion of her 90th birthday; and WHEREAS, Willie Mae Kirk was born February 4, 1921; one of 14 siblings, she lived in Manor as a young child, and she was orphaned when she was 12 years old; she then moved to Austin to live with an older sister; and WHEREAS, She attended Samuel Huston College, now Huston-Tillotson University, and then served generations of children in her 32-year career as a teacher; more than a teacher, she had a special relationship with her students and was truly a caregiver; she was known for helping them out however she could, from bringing them home for a meal to buying them warm clothes; and WHEREAS, She met Lee Kirk while in college, and they later married and raised four children, who all grew up to be smart, successful, community-minded people, including the former Dallas mayor and current United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Kirk has been a sustaining member of the Travis County Democratic Party since 1984; she has long been an active participant in the election process and worked for equal rights throughout her life; she has always thought it only fair to expect that all people be treated with dignity and respect as equal human beings; and WHEREAS, The world is indeed a better place because Willie Mae Kirk is a part of it; she is a revered and respected member of her community and is renowned for her wisdom, her engaging personality, and her compassion for others; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby recognize Willie Mae Kirk as a treasured citizen of this state and extend to her best wishes for a memorable birthday celebration; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Mrs. Kirk as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
