SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 157 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join members and supporters of the American Heart Association in recognizing February 4, 2011, as National Wear Red Day in Texas; and WHEREAS, Diseases of the heart are the nation's leading cause of death, and stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death; cardiovascular disease claims the lives of over 421,000 American females each year, approximately one death per minute; 52 percent of all deaths due to cardiovascular disease and 60 percent of all deaths due to stroke occur in females; and WHEREAS, Too many women die each year because they are unaware that heart disease is their number one killer; in 2007, the direct and indirect cost of cardiovascular diseases in the United States including stroke, was estimated to be $286 billion; nearly as many women die of heart disease, stroke, and all other cardiovascular diseases than of the next four leading causes of death combined, including all cancers, yet only 16 percent of women surveyed in 2009 identified cardiovascular disease as the greatest health problem facing them; and WHEREAS, The Go Red For Women initiative is the American Heart Association's national movement to increase awareness about heart disease and to empower women to take charge of their lives and their heart health; making the right choices relating to proper nutrition, physical activity, and other healthy lifestyle choices is an essential part of living a heart-healthy life, and this initiative is designed to remind all people that by choosing to Make It Your Mission! you can save lives; and WHEREAS, February is American Heart Month, and the State of Texas joins in National Wear Red Day on February 4, 2011, as an opportunity for all citizens to show their support for women in the fight against heart disease; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby proclaim February 4, 2011, as National Wear Red Day in Texas and encourage all citizens to wear red on that day to increase awareness about women's cardiovascular disease and to show their support; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in commemoration of National Wear Red Day in Texas.
