SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 189 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the delegation from the City of Mansfield in celebrating Mansfield Day at the State Capitol on February 8, 2011; and WHEREAS, Representatives of the delegation include Mayor David Cook, City Manager Clayton Chandler, members of the city council and city staff, and members of the Mansfield Area Chamber of Commerce; and WHEREAS, Mansfield was founded in the 1850s by Ralph Man and Julian Field, who were partners in the first steam-powered gristmill in North Texas; the town of Mansfield formed around their business and was incorporated in 1890; and WHEREAS, Mansfield today has a population of some 58,000 and, at 50 square miles, is the third-largest city by area in Tarrant County; located in the southeast corner of the county, it lies 16 miles south of Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys, and it offers easy access to the rest of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex; and WHEREAS, One of the fastest-growing cities in North Texas, the City of Mansfield prides itself on its family-friendly atmosphere and was listed 24th in Money magazine's "Best Places to Live" for 2009, also making the top 100 in 2007; its population growth over the last 10 years is attributed to its exemplary schools and quality of life, its low crime rate, its potential for development and proximity to major urban areas, and its strong community spirit; the city won a gold medal from the Texas Recreation and Parks Society for having the best parks system in Texas in 2009, and in June of 2010, Mansfield became the first city in Texas to restrict the sale of the synthetic cannabinoid product K2; and WHEREAS, The Mansfield Independent School District continues to receive high marks and recognition for academic achievement; numerous students from four of the district's high schools have distinguished themselves with honors in national achievement, merit, scholarship, and advanced placement programs; and WHEREAS, Mansfield is home to major employers such as Mouser Electronics, Methodist Mansfield Medical Center, LyondellBasell, and Siméus Foods, and residents enjoy a lower cost of living than in most major metropolitan areas; and WHEREAS, The Mansfield Area Chamber of Commerce has played a significant role in the development of the city; it represents more than 700 local businesses and works diligently to establish and maintain relationships with local, state, and federal government; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the City of Mansfield and extend a warm welcome to all who have come to Austin to celebrate Mansfield Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a memento of this special day.
