                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 277
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 join the citizens of Maverick County in celebrating Maverick
 County Day at the State Capitol; and
 WHEREAS, Maverick County was formed in 1856 from a part of
 Kinney County and was named for cattleman and state legislator
 Samuel A. Maverick; the city of Eagle Pass, the county seat, was
 incorporated in 1910; the historic Maverick County Courthouse
 was completed in 1885 and has been declared a Texas Historic
 Landmark; and
 WHEREAS, Over the years, the citizens of Maverick County
 and Eagle Pass have demonstrated a commitment to working together
 to create jobs, motivate youth, and continuously improve the
 quality of life in the area; their work has included such
 initiatives as the construction of a sports and arts complex and
 a civic and international trade center; Eagle Pass was recently
 designated a Texas Main Street City; and
 WHEREAS, County and civic leaders have been dedicated to
 ensuring the effective collaboration of the public and private
 sectors and to overseeing an economic development plan that
 attracts and retains quality businesses, industries, and trade;
 in addition, the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas and its
 casino have had a positive effect on the county's jobs, revenue,
 and tourism; and
 WHEREAS, Places of interest in Maverick County include the
 Fort Duncan Museum in Eagle Pass and the Eagle Pass Auxiliary Air
 Field in Quemado; the area offers hunting and fishing
 opportunities and a variety of recreational activities to
 residents and visitors alike; and
 WHEREAS, Maverick County is home to hospitals and clinics
 that enhance the quality of health care for its citizens, and the
 county intends to expand on health care services in the near
 future; it is also home to Southwest Texas Junior College and Sul
 Ross State University-Rio Grande College, and the community is
 working toward the goal of having a four-year college in the
 county; and
 WHEREAS, Maverick County Day is an opportunity for the
 county's residents to celebrate the region's rich history, its
 many assets, and its plans for the future; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, hereby recognize Maverick County Day at the State
 Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation best wishes for a
 productive and memorable occasion; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
 honor of the citizens of Maverick County.
