SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 366
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and
Scholarships and its board members, staff, and volunteers on the
occasion of the organization's 15th anniversary and its golf cup
tournament; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1996 by business and civic leaders, the
Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships,
known as VAMOS, was created in response to a need to improve
educational opportunities for Hispanics in the Rio Grande
Valley; and
WHEREAS, The organization strives to provide promising
Valley students with four-year scholarships to pursue a
postsecondary education; by offering financial assistance and
mentoring to students of Hidalgo, Starr, and Cameron Counties,
the organization hopes to decrease the dropout rate of area
Hispanic students and increase interest in higher education; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the organization has raised
over $14 million and has awarded hundreds of students with
four-year scholarships to the college or university of their
choice; volunteers serve as mentors to scholarship recipients,
and recipients are monitored throughout their education; and
WHEREAS, In celebration of the organization's 15th
anniversary, it is sponsoring its 15th annual VAMOS Golf
Tournament on March 5, 2011; attendees will be contributing to
the organization's goals, thus providing support for the
educational opportunities for the Hispanic youth of the Rio
Grande Valley; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
Legislature, hereby commend the Valley Alliance of Mentors for
Opportunities and Scholarships for helping young Hispanics to
acquire a higher education and extend best wishes to its members on
the occasion of its 15th annual golf tournament; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor
of the Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships.
