SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 407 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to welcome the delegation of distinguished citizens, business owners, and elected officials from Dallas who have come to the State Capitol on March 1, 2011, to celebrate City of Dallas Day; and WHEREAS, The City of Dallas is the ninth-largest city in the nation, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is the country's fourth-largest metropolitan area; and WHEREAS, Dallas is a city filled with big thinkers and imaginative people, whose ideas and innovations contribute greatly to the unique, larger-than-life character of the city; and WHEREAS, Thinking big is part of this city's maverick history, along with a bravado and spirit powerful enough to constantly reinvent the city's approach to business, fashion, arts, and entertainment; and WHEREAS, The Dallas City Council represents some 1.2 million citizens in a geographic area of 385 square miles; jobs within Dallas account for approximately one million of the metropolitan area's 2.8 million jobs; a major business center, Dallas is home to over 60,000 businesses, including over 100 corporate headquarters operations, 19 of which are in the Fortune 1000; and WHEREAS, Dallas has a richly diverse business base with a large, well-educated workforce, a central location and a history of innovation that supports several major industry clusters, including building design, construction, furnishings, food manufacturing, specialized instruments, information technology services, logistics, media, telecommunications, and transportation manufacturing and assembly; and WHEREAS, The costs of living and doing business in Dallas compare favorably to those in other leading cities in the United States, with the overall cost of living at 92 percent of the national average; and WHEREAS, Combined with low taxes and reasonable real estate costs, this helps businesses and households make more of their income, improving the business bottom line and the individual's quality of life; and WHEREAS, Dallas has a diverse housing stock, ranging from historic single-family neighborhoods to high-rise condominiums, and can accommodate any household type; and WHEREAS, For recreation, Dallas offers more shopping and restaurant opportunities per capita than anywhere else in America, diverse cultural venues from small theater companies and galleries to the nation's largest arts district; parks, trails, forests, and lakes, as well as professional sports venues, round out the local attractions; and WHEREAS, Dallas leaders understand that doing business in a sustainable way enables an organization to provide its services more efficiently; for decades, the City of Dallas has demonstrated a commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in running the city; numerous initiatives, policies, and awards reveal the city's dedication to improving the quality of life through environmental sustainability; and WHEREAS, The City of Dallas, through the outstanding leadership of its mayor and city council, is committed to working in partnership with the Texas Legislature, particularly the Dallas delegation, to ensure the continued well-being of the city and its residents; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby commend the City of Dallas, its mayor, and its city council on their commitment to the citizens of Dallas and their contributions to the prosperity of this state and recognize March 1, 2011, as City of Dallas Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the visiting delegation from Dallas as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
