SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 411 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride in celebrating Texas Independence Day on March 2 and in paying special tribute to the life of Sam Houston, who was born on that day in 1793; and WHEREAS, One of the most outstanding heroes in Texas history and in the history of our nation, Sam Houston led a remarkable life, and his great leadership and accomplishments played a prominent role in shaping the Republic of Texas and our state; and WHEREAS, Sam Houston was a participant in and was wounded in the War of 1812; he served as a United States Congressman from Tennessee, as a governor of Tennessee, and as an ambassador for the Cherokee Indian Nation; and WHEREAS, In 1835, Sam Houston was elected major general of the Texas Army; he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836, and led the Texas Army to victory at San Jacinto on April 21; he served as president of the Republic of Texas, as a United States senator from Texas, and as governor of the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, He was a lifelong supporter of education, and Sam Houston State University proudly bears his name; the Sam Houston State University Alumni Association continues to honor his life and legacy and to celebrate his birthday; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby join the Sam Houston State University Alumni Association in honoring the life of Sam Houston and in declaring March 2, 2011, Sam Houston Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for this special occasion.
