                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 496
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize Dr. Ron Tyler, who is retiring on April 1, 2011, after
 many years of outstanding service as director of the Amon Carter
 Museum of American Art; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Tyler began his service to the museum in 1969
 and served as curator and assistant director for collections and
 programs for more than 17 years; he then served as a professor of
 history at The University of Texas at Austin for 20 years before
 returning to the museum to assume the duties of director; and
 WHEREAS, Under his expert leadership, the museum's
 collection has grown through numerous valuable acquisitions of
 American art; the museum has also undergone extensive renovation
 and updating, and its educational programs and online presence
 have expanded dramatically; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Tyler has published many articles in scholarly
 publications and has organized numerous major exhibitions; he is
 in much demand as a lecturer on exploration art, American and
 Western art and history, and John James Audubon; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Tyler is the editor and author of more than
 two dozen books, including Alfred Jacob Miller: Artist as
 Explorer and The Image of America in Caricature and Cartoon; he
 has received numerous awards for his work, including the Texas
 State Historical Association's Coral H. Tullis Award for the best
 book on Texas history for The Big Bend: A History of the Last
 Texas Frontier; and
 WHEREAS, An exemplary historian and administrator, he is
 respected and admired by his colleagues, and his presence at the
 Amon Carter Museum of American Art will be greatly missed; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Ron Tyler on his exceptional
 service as director of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and
 extend to him best wishes for continued success in all his future
 endeavors; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
