                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 51
 In Memory
 of
 Mary Espiritu
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Mary Espiritu,
 who died January 15, 2011, at the age of 88; and
 WHEREAS, Mary Espiritu was born in San Antonio on September
 8, 1922, to Richard and Amelia DeLeon; during her 40-year tenure
 as an employee at Kelly Air Force Base, she progressed from clerk
 typist to logistics management specialist; and
 WHEREAS, She was a longtime advocate of equal rights for
 women and minorities, and she counseled and mentored many women
 throughout her life; citing her own example of attaining a
 bachelor's degree while working full-time and being a mother, she
 encouraged women to pursue a higher education; and
 WHEREAS, She was active in her community and held
 leadership positions with various civic organizations, including
 the League of United Latin American Citizens, where she served as
 president of Council 4619 and as women's deputy for District XV;
 she received numerous awards over the years, was recognized as
 one of the "100 Outstanding Hispanic Women in Communications" by
 a national Hispanic magazine, and was inducted into the National
 Hispanic Women's Hall of Fame; and
 WHEREAS, Mary Espiritu had a positive impact on the lives
 of many people through her volunteer work and her service to her
 community; a devoted mother and grandmother, she leaves behind
 memories that will be treasured for years to come by her family,
 her many friends, and all those who had the good fortune of
 knowing this dynamic and caring woman; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, hereby honor the memory of Mary Espiritu and extend
 sincere condolences to her bereaved family; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
 family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,
 and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
 Mary Espiritu.
