                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 535
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 join the citizens of Uvalde County in celebrating Uvalde County
 Day at the State Capitol; and
 WHEREAS, Situated along the edge of the Edwards Plateau,
 Uvalde County was established by an act of the Texas Legislature
 on February 2, 1856, and was named for Juan de Ugalde, a Spanish
 governor of Coahuila who had led troops to a decisive victory
 over Apache warriors in 1790; and
 WHEREAS, The county seat of Uvalde was founded by merchant
 and entrepreneur Reading Black in the 1850s as a marketing center
 for westward-bound settlers, local ranchers and farmers, and
 soldiers from nearby Fort Inge; it is known for its four public
 squares and striking architecture; and
 WHEREAS, Uvalde County is a major center for wool and
 mohair production, and area farmers generate a wide variety of
 agricultural products; it is also home to Southwest Texas Junior
 College, which serves 11 counties in Southwest Texas; and
 WHEREAS, The people of Uvalde County are confidently
 facing the future as they celebrate their rich and colorful past;
 it is truly fitting that they be recognized for their many
 achievements in furthering the growth and progress of our state;
 now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Uvalde County on
 their many contributions to our state and extend to them best
 wishes for a memorable Uvalde County Day at the State Capitol;
 and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 the county as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
