SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 546 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Jane Smoot, a treasured Austin citizen who has deep roots in the community and who played a longtime role in the education of many area residents; and WHEREAS, Jane Smoot was born in Austin on December 13, 1919; she graduated from Austin High School in 1935, and she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from The University of Texas at Austin in 1938; she earned a master's degree from the university one year later; and WHEREAS, Known for her successful career in the field of education, Jane served for 40 years as a schoolteacher with the Austin Independent School District; and WHEREAS, Jane's father, L. K. Smoot, was a law librarian and an editorial reporter for the Texas Supreme Court for 66 years; his years of service earned him the designation of longest-tenured state employee on record; and WHEREAS, Jane is knowledgeable about the early days of Austin and enjoys the Capitol and its grounds and the history it represents; at the age of 91, she lives in the Austin family home that was built by her grandfather, R. K. Smoot, in 1876; and WHEREAS, Her home is the oldest home in Austin to be occupied continuously by the same family line, and fortunately for the city, Jane has now made plans for its preservation as a community museum for Austinites to enjoy in the future; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby commend Jane Smoot for her work as a longtime Austin educator and pay tribute to her and her family members for their exemplary citizenship and for preserving a piece of Austin's history by keeping this treasured home intact and in the family; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Jane Smoot as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
