                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 584
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize Incarnate Word Academy on the grand occasion of its
 140th anniversary, which is being celebrated on March 25, 2011;
 and
 WHEREAS, Incarnate Word Academy was opened on March 19,
 1871, as a Catholic school for girls from elementary through high
 school; it was founded by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and
 Blessed Sacrament, who had arrived in Corpus Christi just days
 earlier; and
 WHEREAS, The school was first established in the modest
 home provided for the Incarnate Word Sisters; it was later
 expanded to a separate building and after the sisters moved into
 the convent on South Alameda in 1950, funds were raised to build a
 new high school, and the new facilities were dedicated in 1955; and
 WHEREAS, In 1965, Incarnate Word Academy opened what is now
 the oldest still-operating Montessori school in Corpus Christi;
 the academy became coeducational at the high school level in
 1975, and the campus has continued to expand with new buildings
 and the latest in technological innovations, including a
 campuswide virtual library; it has earned championships in three
 of the last four years in Texas Association of Private and
 Parochial Schools academic competitions; and
 WHEREAS, Incarnate Word Academy remains true to its
 original mission of providing an education with high academic
 standards, encouragement for students to achieve their highest
 potential, and the opportunity for faith development; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, hereby congratulate all current and former
 students, teachers, and administrators of Incarnate Word Academy
 on the school's 140th anniversary and commend the Sisters of the
 Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament for their positive
 contributions to the education and development of young people in
 the Corpus Christi community; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 the academy as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
