SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 761
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Congregation Shearith Israel, which is celebrating
more than 125 years of service to the Jewish community in Dallas
as it marks the 13th anniversary of Rabbi William Gershon's
arrival at the synagogue; and
WHEREAS, Congregation Shearith Israel traces its roots to
a group of 12 Jewish men who gathered in 1884 to establish a new
synagogue; through the years, it has grown to become a vibrant
center for learning and sharing, providing members with
opportunities for prayer, healing, and celebration; and
WHEREAS, One of the leading synagogues of Conservative
Judaism, Congregation Shearith Israel has worked to establish
the pillars of Jewish life, learning and community, through the
formation of a religious school and youth program and the
founding of the Ann and Nate Levine Academy, a Solomon Schechter
School; and
WHEREAS, For 13 years, Rabbi William Gershon has served the
congregation with vision, energy, and a passion for Judaism and
the Jewish people; through his extraordinary teaching,
inspirational sermons, and dedicated leadership, he has created
a renewed sense of vibrancy and commitment among the
congregation; and
WHEREAS, Congregation Shearith Israel is truly deserving
of recognition for its rich legacy of service to the Jewish
community of Dallas; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
Legislature, hereby commend the members of Congregation Shearith
Israel and Rabbi William Gershon on their dedication to
developing and supporting the power of community and sense of
family that is the synagogue and extend to them best wishes for
continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the synagogue as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
