                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 886
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
join the Arthritis Foundation and Texans across the state in
observing May of 2011 as Fight Arthritis Pain Month in Texas; and
WHEREAS, Arthritis is the number one cause of disability in
the United States, and more than 4.1 million Texans suffer the
 effects of the disease; and
WHEREAS, Affecting all demographic and socioeconomic
groups, arthritis puts people at higher risk for a number of
other conditions, including premature heart disease, diabetes,
high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety; its effects cost
Texans an estimated $8.7 billion each year; and
WHEREAS, Arthritis is widely believed to affect only older
adults, but more than 300,000 children in the United States have
been diagnosed with the disease; and
WHEREAS, Arthritis exacts a toll on a significant part of this
state's population, and it is truly fitting that a month be set aside
to educate the public about this disease and about the resources
available to those who suffer from it; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
Legislature, hereby commend the Arthritis Foundation on its efforts
to raise awareness of the disease and extend best wishes for a
