                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 943
 In Memory
 of
 David M. Himmelblau
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of noted scholar and
 professor Dr. David M. Himmelblau, who died April 27, 2011, at
 the age of 87; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Himmelblau was a native of Chicago, where he
 attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools; while
 attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he was a
 member of the United States Army Reserve Officers' Training
 Corps, and he made the transition to active duty and served as an
 intelligence officer during World War II; and
 WHEREAS, Following his military service, he returned to
 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned a
 bachelor's degree in chemical engineering; he went on to earn a
 master of business administration degree from Northwestern
 University and master's and doctoral degrees in chemical
 engineering from the University of Washington; and
 WHEREAS, After receiving his doctorate, he moved with his
 family to Austin and joined the faculty of The University of
 Texas at Austin, where he taught for 42 years; he wrote 11 books
 and more than 200 articles and was the Paul D. and Betty Robertson
 Meek and American Petrofina Foundation Centennial Professor
 Emeritus in Chemical Engineering; and
 WHEREAS, His book, Basic Principles and Calculations in
 Chemical Engineering, was recognized as one of the most important
 books in the field by the American Institute of Chemical
 Engineers; he played a vital role in the development of computer
 aids for chemical engineering education and won numerous awards
 and citations for his outstanding contributions to his
 profession; and
 WHEREAS, A man of diverse and varied interests, he gave
 unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel
 will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
 grandfather, and his family and many friends will continue to
 live with the cherished memories of his life and his many
 accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
 family of Dr. David M. Himmelblau: his wife of 62 years, Betty
 Hartman Himmelblau; his children and their spouses, Margaret and
 Don Nellor and Andrew Himmelblau and Ellen Hurley; his
 grandchildren, Travis and Stacie Nellor; and his brother, Leo
 Himmelblau; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
 memory of Dr. David M. Himmelblau.
