H.R. No. 124 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The baseball team of Eastfield College in Mesquite earned the school's third national championship in the sport on May 26, 2011, with a victory in the title game of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III World Series, held at Mike Carter Field in Tyler; and WHEREAS, After losing their first game in the national tournament, the Harvesters came roaring back to claim their next six contests; their advance through the losers bracket concluded with back-to-back triumphs over defending national champion Gloucester County College of New Jersey, including a commanding 8-4 win to secure the title; Eastfield became just the second team in the history of the Division III World Series to become champions after dropping the opening game; and WHEREAS, The Harvesters' come-from-behind success in the tournament was typical of the 2011 season, in which they got off to a slow start before hitting their stride and going on to win the Metro Athletic Conference title and the NJCAA District C championship; and WHEREAS, In recognition of his fine play in Tyler, Nathan Hancock won the 2011 Tournament Most Valuable Player award, and Blake Oliver, Michael Weatherly, and Hestand Foster were named to the All-Tournament Team; head coach Michael Martin also received outstanding contributions from the rest of the roster as the 2011 Harvesters joined the 2001 and 2006 teams as national champions; and WHEREAS, Through skill, determination, and an undeniable will to win, the Eastfield College baseball team proved itself the top Division III squad in the country, and these exceptional athletes may take justifiable pride in their achievement; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate the Eastfield College baseball team on winning the NJCAA Division III World Series and extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
