H.R. No. 134 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Alma Garza concluded her distinguished service as a member of the Edinburg City Council in May 2011; and WHEREAS, During a tenure that spanned five and a half years, Ms. Garza ably guided the Edinburg community during a period of considerable growth; council members oversaw the completion of the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library, the police station, and Fire Station No. 4, and they achieved the goal of improving facilities and services without raising taxes; and WHEREAS, Ms. Garza has dedicated herself to her fellow Edinburg residents for more than a quarter-century; she joined Edinburg Crimestoppers in the 1980s and served on the board of Edinburg Community Development; in addition, she was a member of the Edinburg Junior Service League and served as the city representative on the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council, and she has served on the planning and zoning board; in 2009, she was named Citizen of the Year by the Housing Authority in recognition of her support for its efforts and her community service; and WHEREAS, Each day, public servants improve the quality of life for their fellow citizens in innumerable ways, and the dedicated efforts of Alma Garza have helped to make Edinburg a better place in which to live and work; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Alma Garza for her service on the Edinburg City Council and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Garza as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
