                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 144
 In Memory
 of
 Bruce Dinkins
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Bruce Dinkins,
 director of bands at Bowie High School, who died June 22, 2011, at
 the age of 60; and
 WHEREAS, Bruce Dinkins was a beloved educator who took
 great delight in the success of his students and truly helped
 them achieve their potential by demanding no less than their
 best; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Dinkins was an educator for more than 30
 years; he taught in high schools in South Carolina and Georgia
 and served on the faculties of Emory University, Georgia State
 University, and Florida Community College in Jacksonville; he
 had performed with four chamber orchestras and conducted the
 Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Tennessee for 24 years; and
 WHEREAS, Under his direction, the Bowie High School band
 has won national acclaim and numerous awards; it has earned the
 Sweepstakes award from the University Interscholastic League in
 concert and marching every year since his arrival at the school
 in 2001; it was named one of the top 12 bands at the Bands of
 America Grand Nationals competition, and it was named Grand
 National Champion at the Smoky Mountain Music Festival; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Dinkins was an outstanding band director,
 teacher, and mentor; he set high standards for his students and
 helped them develop their musical talents while also developing
 character, discipline, and respect for others; thousands of
 students have benefited from his wise guidance and leadership;
 and
 WHEREAS, Bruce Dinkins was a devoted husband and father,
 and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished for years to
 come by his family, his students, and his friends; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
 condolences to the bereaved family of Bruce Dinkins: his wife,
 Hildy; his daughter, Jordan; and his son, Adam; and, be it
 further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
 memory of Bruce Dinkins.
