                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 145
 In Memory
 of
 Ramiro Raul Casso
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
 commemorates the life of legendary South Texas physician,
 educator, and civil rights leader Dr. Ramiro Raul Casso, who died
 June 23, 2011, at the age of 88; and
 WHEREAS, Ramiro R. Casso was born in Laredo on August 4, 1922;
 he earned an engineering degree from Texas A&M University in 1943
 and served overseas during World War II; after returning to
 Laredo, he worked as an engineer for two years; and
 WHEREAS, He then earned a medical degree and moved with his
 family to McAllen; he had a private practice in family medicine
 for 37 years and devoted much time to treating the indigent and
 uninsured, opening a charity medical clinic for farmworkers and
 helping to found the Hidalgo County Health Care Corporation; and
 WHEREAS, After retiring from private practice in 1994, he
 continued working for civil rights and better access to health
 care at the local, state, and national levels; he helped found
 the nursing program at South Texas College and was instrumental
 in the establishment of its Nursing and Allied Health Center,
 which was subsequently named after him; and
 WHEREAS, He was a devoted and caring husband, father, and
 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will long be
 treasured by his family, his many friends, and all those who had
 the good fortune of knowing him; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life
 of Dr. Ramiro Raul Casso and extend sincere condolences to his
 bereaved family; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
 Dr. Ramiro Raul Casso.
