SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 44 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the grand occasion of the 25th anniversary of the South Dallas Cultural Center; and WHEREAS, On June 7, 1986, the South Dallas Cultural Center became a reality due to the efforts of a group of African American artists and key figures in the community who were led by Art and Elaine Thornton; and WHEREAS, These community leaders had encouraged the City of Dallas to develop a multipurpose arts facility in the southern sector of the city; under the leadership of city officials and park board members, funds were allocated through the 1982 bond program to construct the $1.5 million, 24,000-square-foot facility; and WHEREAS, The center's facility features a 120-seat black box theater, a visual arts gallery, dance studios, media arts, printmaking, and photography, as well as a full-service digital recording studio; and WHEREAS, The center offers classes to help inspire people of all ages to appreciate the art of the African diaspora, and the center has truly become a valuable cultural asset to the community; in celebration of the center's 25th anniversary, special events have been planned for each Saturday in June; a community block party is being held on June 18, which will include cooking demonstrations, children's activities, a variety of exhibitions, a film screening, and tours of the center; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby join the citizens of Dallas in celebrating the 25th anniversary of the South Dallas Cultural Center and extend best wishes to all attending the anniversary celebrations; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this special occasion.
