SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Houston on the occasion of its 130th anniversary, which is being celebrated August 14, 2011; and WHEREAS, Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church traces its roots to a congregation that was officially organized on July 10, 1881; and WHEREAS, Over the years, Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church has ministered to the temporal and spiritual needs of countless people; it has steadfastly engaged in carrying out the spirit of the original Free African Society, the 18th-century movement from which the denomination arose; and WHEREAS, Under the guidance and wise stewardship of its previous pastors, and with the outstanding leadership of its current pastor, Dr. Ruben D. Braziel, the church has continued to grow and to play a vital role in the life of the community; and WHEREAS, Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church has become an invaluable font of strength for church members during times of hardship and bereavement and a source of fellowship during times of abundance and joy; and WHEREAS, The celebration of its 130th anniversary is an expression of the church's enduring commitment to its mission of providing enlightenment and hope to its congregation; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend best wishes to the clergy and members of Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church on the joyous occasion of its 130th anniversary; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
