SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 71 In Memory of Marie Barnhart Hightower Hudson WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and commemorates the life of Marie Barnhart Hightower Hudson, who died June 9, 2011; and WHEREAS, WHEREAS, A woman of many talents and interests, she served in numerous capacities over the course of her professional career; she was an elementary school teacher before entering the realm of government and politics, and she pursued all her endeavors with great dedication; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Hudson was the first woman to be elected and confirmed by the Texas Senate as its Sergeant-at-Arms; she served as a staff member in the United States Congress and joined her husband for more than a decade as a political consultant for such organizations as Planned Parenthood, the Children's Defense Fund, and People for the American Way; and WHEREAS, A woman of courage and compassion, she gave unselfishly to others, and her generosity, her strength in the face of adversity, and her enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten by those who knew her; and WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and although she will be deeply missed by her family and countless friends, she will continue to live in their hearts and minds for years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Marie Barnhart Hightower Hudson: her husband of 35 years, Michael; her son and daughter-in-law, Jeff Hightower, Jr., and his wife, Jill; her daughters and sons-in-law, Lauryn and Clint Edwards and Meredyth and Andy Wohlgenant; her brothers, Bobby Barnhart, Jr., and Thomas Barnhart; and her grandchildren; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Marie Barnhart Hightower Hudson.
