88 AN ACT
99 relating to the automatic admission to a public institution of
1010 higher education of a child of a person who was killed or sustained
1111 a fatal injury in the line of duty in the United States armed
1212 forces.
1313 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1414 SECTION 1. Section 51.803(e), Education Code, is amended to
1515 read as follows:
1616 (e) Each institution of higher education shall admit an
1717 applicant for admission to the institution as an undergraduate
1818 student if the applicant:
1919 (1) is the child of:
2020 (A) a public servant listed in Section 615.003,
2121 Government Code, who was killed or sustained a fatal injury in the
2222 line of duty; or
2323 (B) a member of the armed forces of the United
2424 States, including the National Guard, who was killed or sustained a
2525 fatal injury in the line of duty; and
2626 (2) meets the minimum requirements, if any,
2727 established for purposes of this subsection by the governing board
2828 of the institution for high school or prior college-level grade
2929 point average and performance on standardized tests.
3030 SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act to Section
3131 51.803(e), Education Code, applies beginning with admissions to
3232 institutions of higher education for the 2014-2015 academic year.
3333 Admissions to an institution before that academic year are governed
3434 by the law in effect before the effective date of this Act, and the
3535 former law is continued in effect for that purpose.
3636 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2013.
