10 | 10 | | higher education of a child of a person who was killed or sustained |

11 | 11 | | a fatal injury in the line of duty in the United States armed |
---|
12 | 12 | | forces. |

13 | 13 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

14 | 14 | | SECTION 1. Section 51.803(e), Education Code, is amended to |
---|
15 | 15 | | read as follows: |
---|
16 | 16 | | (e) Each institution of higher education shall admit an |
---|
17 | 17 | | applicant for admission to the institution as an undergraduate |
---|
18 | 18 | | student if the applicant: |
---|
19 | 19 | | (1) is the child of: |
---|
20 | 20 | | (A) a public servant listed in Section 615.003, |
---|
21 | 21 | | Government Code, who was killed or sustained a fatal injury in the |
---|
22 | 22 | | line of duty; or |
---|
23 | 23 | | (B) a member of the armed forces of the United |
---|
24 | 24 | | States, including the National Guard, who was killed or sustained a |
---|
25 | 25 | | fatal injury in the line of duty; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | (2) meets the minimum requirements, if any, |
---|
27 | 27 | | established for purposes of this subsection by the governing board |
---|
28 | 28 | | of the institution for high school or prior college-level grade |
---|
29 | 29 | | point average and performance on standardized tests. |
---|
30 | 30 | | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act to Section |
---|
31 | 31 | | 51.803(e), Education Code, applies beginning with admissions to |
---|
32 | 32 | | institutions of higher education for the 2014-2015 academic year. |
---|
33 | 33 | | Admissions to an institution before that academic year are governed |
---|
34 | 34 | | by the law in effect before the effective date of this Act, and the |
---|
35 | 35 | | former law is continued in effect for that purpose. |
---|
36 | 36 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2013. |
