| 12 | 12 | | certain school districts. |

| 13 | 13 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 14 | 14 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 38, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | amended by adding Section 38.028 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Sec. 38.028. TYPE 2 DIABETES PREVENTION AND AWARENESS |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | PROGRAM. (a) This section applies only to a school district with a |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | student enrollment of at least 60,000 that is located in a county on |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the international border with a population of 800,000 or more. |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (b) A school district to which this section applies shall |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | hold an event once each school year in which local nonprofit |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | diabetes prevention organizations visit each school campus to |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | educate students in the third through 12th grades about Type 2 |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | diabetes prevention and awareness. |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2013-2014 |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | school year. |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2013. |
