99 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
1010 AN ACT
1111 relating to events to educate students about Type 2 diabetes in
1212 certain school districts.
1313 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1414 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 38, Education Code, is
1515 amended by adding Section 38.028 to read as follows:
1616 Sec. 38.028. TYPE 2 DIABETES PREVENTION AND AWARENESS
1717 PROGRAM. (a) This section applies only to a school district with a
1818 student enrollment of at least 60,000 that is located in a county on
1919 the international border with a population of 800,000 or more.
2020 (b) A school district to which this section applies shall
2121 hold an event once each school year in which local nonprofit
2222 diabetes prevention organizations visit each school campus to
2323 educate students in the third through 12th grades about Type 2
2424 diabetes prevention and awareness.
2525 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2013-2014
2626 school year.
2727 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2828 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2929 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3030 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3131 Act takes effect September 1, 2013.
