99 relating to an identifying number assigned to a notary public by the
1010 secretary of state.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Section 406.001, Government Code, is amended to
1313 read as follows:
1414 Sec. 406.001. APPOINTMENTS. (a) The secretary of state may
1515 appoint a notary public at any time.
1616 (b) The secretary of state shall assign each notary public
1717 an identifying number and keep a record of the number assigned to
1818 each notary public.
1919 SECTION 2. Section 406.008(b), Government Code, is amended
2020 to read as follows:
2121 (b) When the commission is issued, the secretary of state
2222 shall supply the notary public with:
2323 (1) materials outlining the powers and duties of the
2424 office;
2525 (2) a list of prohibited acts; [and]
2626 (3) sample forms for an acknowledgment, jurat, and
2727 verification and for the administering of an oath, protest, and
2828 deposition; and
2929 (4) the identifying number assigned to the notary
3030 public.
3131 SECTION 3. Section 406.013(a), Government Code, is amended
3232 to read as follows:
3333 (a) A notary public shall provide a seal of office that
3434 clearly shows, when embossed, stamped, or printed on a document,
3535 the words "Notary Public, State of Texas" around a star of five
3636 points, the notary public's name, the notary public's identifying
3737 number, and the date the notary public's commission expires. The
3838 notary public shall authenticate all official acts with the seal of
3939 office.
4040 SECTION 4. Notwithstanding the requirements of this Act
4141 that the secretary of state issue an identifying number to each
4242 notary public, the secretary of state is required to issue an
4343 identifying number only to a notary public who applies for a
4444 commission or a reappointment on or after the effective date of this
4545 Act.
4646 SECTION 5. This Act takes effect January 1, 2014.
