88 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
99 WHEREAS, On National Signing Day, Texans join with others
1010 throughout the country in focusing attention on high school
1111 football players who receive college athletic scholarships, yet the
1212 equally noteworthy achievements of the Lone Star State's academic
1313 champions often go unnoticed; and
1414 WHEREAS, While outstanding accomplishments on the football
1515 field and in other athletic pursuits are understandably admired,
1616 the future prosperity of the Lone Star State depends more on the
1717 educational ability of its young people; every year, many Texas
1818 students earn scholarships as a result of their exemplary
1919 performance in the classroom, and their intelligence and hard work
2020 are deserving of acclaim; and
2121 WHEREAS, Academic superstars from Texarkana to El Paso and
2222 from the Panhandle to the Lower Rio Grande Valley successfully
2323 compete for a wide variety of scholarships, spurred on by their
2424 natural intellectual curiosity and their desire to realize their
2525 dreams; and
2626 WHEREAS, Thanks to the generous sponsorship of a broad range
2727 of institutions and organizations, these remarkable young Texans
2828 are rewarded with the financial support they need to continue
2929 learning at the college level; their studies will allow them to take
3030 their place among the next generation of professionals and
3131 entrepreneurs, and they will play an essential part in our state's
3232 continuing progress; and
3333 WHEREAS, By setting aside a day to honor those who have proven
3434 themselves worthy of academic scholarships, Texas citizens can help
3535 reaffirm the value of education and encourage students to reach
3636 their full potential; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the 83rd Legislature of the State of Texas
3838 hereby designate the first Saturday in May as Texas Academic
3939 College Scholarship Day; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That in accordance with the provisions of Section
4141 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remains in effect
4242 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is passed.
