H.R. No. 1178
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Austin Academy for Excellence Jazz Band of
Garland performed at the 2013 Jazz Education Network conference
held January 2-5 in Atlanta, Georgia; and
WHEREAS, The Jazz Education Network was founded in 2008 to
advance jazz education and appreciation, promote performance, and
develop new audiences, and in just five years the organization has
grown to more than 1,500 members in 22 countries; and
WHEREAS, Under the direction of Margaret Wis, with assistance
from Preston Cummins, the Austin Academy for Excellence Jazz Band
was one of only two middle school ensembles in the nation invited to
perform at the conference; the members of this talented group of
musicians include Zac Bonar, Brandon Motes, Matthew Cole, Jevin
James, Alec Degelia, Chukwudi Agbakwu, Alex Lenhard, Michaela
Haskell, Michael Wonson, Brett Fearer, Ross Gerberich, Jonathan
Sandoval, Matthew Kurilla, Michael Kanu, Rony Rodriguez, Diego
Figueroa, Ryan Mulqueen, Daniel Goins, Sam Barbee, and Tanner
Sanderson; the band's crew is comprised of Olivia Sanborn, Dylan
Turner, and Ashley Banuelos; and
WHEREAS, To help offset the cost of the trip, the band held a
number of fund-raisers and benefit concerts; in addition to
performing at the conference during their visit to Atlanta, the
entourage attended performances by outstanding jazz artists from
around the country; and
WHEREAS, The members of the Austin Academy for Excellence
Jazz Band have demonstrated exceptional talent and a commitment to
the highest standards, and they may take great pride in their
participation in this national event; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature hereby recognize the Austin Academy for Excellence Jazz
Band for performing at the 2013 Jazz Education Network conference
and extend to the members of the group sincere best wishes for
continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the band as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
