 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, John Travis Garrett, Jr., of Danbury has deservedly
 been named a 2013 Philanthropist of the Year by the Community
 Foundation of Brazoria County; and
 WHEREAS, The son of first-generation farmers Jack and Mary
 Garrett, "Jacko" Garrett earned a degree in business management
 from Texas Christian University in 1966, and then began farming and
 ranching with his father; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Garrett owned Garrett Seed Rice for more than a
 quarter-century, growing certified and registered seed for the rice
 industry in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Mississippi,
 and for over two decades, he operated Danbury Rice Sales, which
 marketed rough rice for local farmers; today, he is the owner and
 president of Eagle Lake Rice Dryer, and he contributes to his
 profession with his involvement in the Texas Rice Improvement
 Association, which he serves as a member of the board, the Texas
 Rice Council, the USA Rice Producers' Group, the Brazoria County
 Farm Bureau, the Texas Seed Trade Association, and the American
 Seed Trade Association; and
 WHEREAS, Respected by his peers, Mr. Garrett has received
 numerous accolades, including the Top Rice Farming Operation in
 Texas award in 1992, selection as the National Rice Farmer of the
 Year in 1993, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Garrett has further distinguished himself
 through his charitable endeavors; in 2003, he established the Share
 the Harvest Foundation, which works with area rice growers and
 vendors to donate rice to local food banks; between 100 and 200
 acres are dedicated to the project annually, translating into 8 to
 10 million servings of rice for people in need; Mr. Garrett has also
 shared his time and talents with the Back Pack Program, the Brazoria
 County Fair, and St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, where he is a
 valued congregant and assistant teacher; moreover, he has been a
 member of the board of the Danbury Independent School District for
 12 years; and
 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Garrett enjoys the love
 and support of his wife, Nancy, and their two daughters, Traci
 LaChance and Christy Jennings; and
 WHEREAS, Dedicated to his fellow citizens, Jacko Garrett has
 set an outstanding example of leadership and generosity, and it is
 indeed a pleasure to honor him for his many good works; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
 Legislature hereby congratulate John Travis "Jacko" Garrett, Jr.,
 on his selection as a 2013 Philanthropist of the Year by the
 Community Foundation of Brazoria County and extend to him sincere
 best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Mr. Garrett as an expression of high regard by the
 Texas House of Representatives.
