H.R. No. 1251 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Longtime high school baseball coach Bobby Moegle received well-deserved recognition when he was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame on February 18, 2013; and WHEREAS, At the time of his retirement, Coach Moegle had recorded more wins than any other baseball coach in the United States, compiling 1,115 victories during his 40 seasons guiding the team at Monterey High School in Lubbock; and WHEREAS, Coach Moegle's tenure at Monterey began in 1960, after he had spent three years as a player in the minor leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals; he established a detail-oriented coaching system that stressed fundamentals and teamwork, and he pushed his players hard, inspiring them to reach their full potential; one of his teaching tools was a written test with 263 questions that was designed to help the players master strategy and communication; nearly as famous as its creator, the exam has been on display at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame since 1999; and WHEREAS, Teams coached by this respected mentor reached the state tournament 13 times, played in eight title games, and were crowned state champion on four occasions, 1972, 1974, 1981, and 1996; over the course of his phenomenal career, Coach Moegle won 8 of every 10 games that he coached; in recognition of his accomplishments, he earned one national coach of the year accolade and three state honors; and WHEREAS, Beyond the numbers, his success can be measured by the positive effect he had on the lives of those he tutored; more than 100 of the young men he coached secured college scholarships; several reached the major leagues, and others have distinguished themselves outside of athletics; the high regard in which he is held by his players was made clear in 1997, when over 50 former Plainsmen were on hand to honor their coach as Monterey High School renamed its diamond Moegle Field; and WHEREAS, With his exceptional ability to teach and inspire, Bobby Moegle transformed the Monterey High School team into a baseball dynasty while helping countless young athletes to succeed on and off the field, and he has earned a place among the legendary figures of Texas high school athletics; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Bobby Moegle on his induction into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Coach Moegle as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
