H.R. No. 1361 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Countless lives were touched by the kindness and generosity of C. C. Smitherman, who passed away on October 12, 2012, at the age of 78; and WHEREAS, Born in Franklin to Audie and Cleo Smitherman, C. C. Smitherman became the first member of his family to graduate from college when he earned a degree in agricultural education from Texas A&M University in 1956; he went on to serve his community in a number of ways, including as the representative for Harris County on the Port of Houston Authority for eight years; he was appointed by Texas Governor Mark White as a commissioner with the Texas Turnpike Authority, and he was also a member of the North Shore Rotary Club, the North Shore Chamber of Commerce, and the Highlands and New Braunfels United Methodist Churches; and WHEREAS, Mr. Smitherman was particularly devoted to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo; he attended it without fail for four decades, and for 37 of those years he served on various organizational committees and in leadership roles; he sponsored or served as a champion buyer of livestock, and he distinguished himself as a director and vice president of the event; he was named a lifetime vice president in 1993; and WHEREAS, His family's ranch in Medina County, where he raised Beefmaster cattle, held a special place in Mr. Smitherman's heart; he was also a skilled marksman and enjoyed hunting; and WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Smitherman enjoyed the love and support of his wife of 56 years, Billie Smitherman; he took great pride in their two children, Barry and Leslie, and their six grandchildren; and WHEREAS, C. C. Smitherman lived a rich and purposeful life, and he will long be remembered with admiration and affection by all who had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of C. C. Smitherman and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his wife, Billie Smitherman; to his children, Barry Smitherman and his wife, Marijane, and Leslie Rutherford and her husband, Jeff; to his grandchildren, Shelton, Wyatt, Owen, Louisa, Jake and his wife, Natalie, and Colton; to his sisters, Marie, Sue, and Doris; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of C.
