H.R. No. 1440
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Pearland Adult Reading Center hosted its 10th
Annual Red Hat Literacy Luncheon on March 28, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1987, the Pearland Adult Reading
Center is a professional, community-based literacy provider,
offering free instruction to adult residents in Brazoria, southern
Harris, eastern Fort Bend, and western Galveston Counties; and
WHEREAS, Through classroom courses, individual tutoring, and
computer-based training, the center's staff helps adult learners
strengthen their reading, writing, and language skills, obtain
GEDs, become U.S. citizens, locate jobs, and earn living wages; and
WHEREAS, Since it first opened its doors with three tutors
paired with three learners, the center has grown to include a
dedicated full-time staff and more than 200 volunteer tutors; in an
inspiring example of the program's success, a former student at the
center is now helping lead its citizenship courses, and under his
tutelage, 40 people have become U.S. citizens; and
WHEREAS, The center's 10th Annual Red Hat Literacy Luncheon
featured local news anchor and author Tom Abrahams; he was joined by
graduates of the center, along with community leaders, and the
event raised more than $30,000 to support the organization's
important work; and
WHEREAS, The Pearland Adult Reading Center provides vital
learning opportunities to area residents, and in so doing, it is
bringing lasting benefits to its participants and their families,
as well as to many communities in southeast Texas; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the Pearland Adult Reading Center
on its 10th Annual Red Hat Literacy Luncheon and extend to all those
associated with the organization sincere best wishes for the
future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
