H.R. No. 1463 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Mitchell Marcus, a senior at Coronado High School in El Paso, claimed his moment in the sports spotlight on February 12, 2013, when he hit a dramatic last-second shot for his school's basketball team in a play that has thrilled sports fans throughout the country; and WHEREAS, For four years, Mr. Marcus has served as manager for the Coronado Thunderbirds; a passionate fan of the sport, he is one of the team's most loyal members and biggest supporters; and WHEREAS, Before the final game of the regular season, Coronado coach Peter Morales invited Mr. Marcus to suit up for the senior night contest against the rival Franklin High School Cougars; dressed in a Thunderbirds uniform for the first time, he cheered as his team played well and held the lead for most of the game; and WHEREAS, In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Coach Morales put Mr. Marcus into the game, and the crowd began to chant his name; the other Thunderbirds on the court were determined to help him score a basket, but time was running out and the Cougars had the ball with 13 seconds remaining; in a moment of exceptional sportsmanship, Jonathon Montanez, a senior guard for Franklin High, passed the ball to Mr. Marcus to give him another opportunity to put points on the board; making the most of his chance, Mr. Marcus took aim, and with one second left on the clock, his layup shot swished through the net; when the buzzer sounded, the crowd rushed to congratulate Mr. Marcus and carried him off the court on their shoulders; and WHEREAS, Both Mr. Marcus and Mr. Montanez have become known across the country for their role in what sports commentators are calling "the play of the year"; their story has been featured on ESPN SportsCenter and the CBS national news, and the two young men were guests on The Ellen DeGeneres Show; moreover, Chris Paul, a member of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers, flew Mr. Marcus, Mr. Montanez, and their families to California to watch a game, and while there, they met some of the league's top players; and WHEREAS, Mitchell Marcus ended the 2013 basketball season with two points, one rebound, one steal, and the opportunity to say that he scored for the district champion Coronado Thunderbirds; more than that, however, he ended his senior year on a high note, experiencing a dream-come-true moment that he will fondly remember for many years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Mitchell Marcus for scoring an exciting, last-second basket for the Coronado Thunderbirds and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Marcus as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
