 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Four exceptional students at Midway High School have
 received accolades for their outstanding performances on the
 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test; and
 WHEREAS, The PSAT/NMSQT is a standardized test, administered
 to high school and middle school students by the College Board and
 National Merit Scholarship Corporation, that measures skills in
 critical reading, writing, and mathematics; in addition to getting
 valuable firsthand practice for the SAT, students who achieve high
 scores on the test are eligible to enter scholarship competitions
 and receive other academic opportunities; and
 WHEREAS, Among the four seniors from Midway High School to
 receive top honors is Sarah Goodnight, daughter of Dr. Jon and Nancy
 Goodnight of McGregor, who was named a National Merit Finalist, an
 accomplishment shared by only one percent of the 1.5 million
 students who entered; an AP Scholar with Distinction, she has
 lettered in academics and placed second in her age group at a USA
 Triathlon national competition; she is active in extracurricular
 programs at her school, belonging to the Meistersingers and
 Chambers choirs, the varsity cross-country and track team, and the
 UIL academic, speech, and debate team; and
 WHEREAS, Lauren McLean, daughter of John and Trina McLean of
 Woodway, is editor-in-chief of her school's yearbook and is a
 Meistersinger, a Diamond Darling, and a member of the Robotics
 Club, the ECO Club, the Astronomy Club, and the Chess Club; she
 belongs to the National Honor Society and the Link Crew and is
 involved in UIL academics and debate; and
 WHEREAS, Jose Gonzalez, son of Vivian Gonzalez Herrero and
 Jose Gonzalez Miranda of Waco, won recognition as a National
 Hispanic Scholar; a member of the National Honor Society, he is also
 involved in the Business Professionals of America broadcast news
 team and plays on the varsity tennis team; and
 WHEREAS, Carlos Leal, son of Cesar and Denise Leal of Hewitt,
 was also named a National Hispanic Scholar; along with working at
 the Leal family businesses, he belongs to the National Honor
 Society and Business Professionals of America and participates in
 athletics and youth group activities at his church; and
 WHEREAS, These outstanding young Texans are a source of great
 pride for their families, school, and communities, and the
 impressive scholarly aptitude and determination that they have
 demonstrated foretell a bright and rewarding future in whatever
 they wish to achieve; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
 Legislature hereby commend Sarah Goodnight, Lauren McLean, Jose
 Gonzalez, and Carlos Leal for their accomplishments on the
 PSAT/NMSQT and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued
 success and happiness; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
 for Ms. Goodnight, Ms. McLean, Mr. Gonzalez, and Mr. Leal as an
 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
