 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have set a new
 record for charitable giving by a U.S. retailer with contributions
 of cash and in-kind donations totaling $1 billion during the past
 fiscal year; and
 WHEREAS, Surpassing the previous year's total of $872
 million, those gifts allowed for the creation of programs in such
 areas as hunger relief, job training, and public education, for
 grants to nonprofit organizations and small business owners, and
 for immediate aid to families affected by natural disasters;
 Walmart associates additionally affirmed their support for the
 company's tradition of caring by logging 2.2 million hours of
 volunteer service, thereby generating $18 million for nonprofits in
 the United States; and
 WHEREAS, In Texas alone, Walmart gave more than $86 million
 to children and adults in need, while customers and associates
 raised another $9 million; the Walmart Foundation supported
 programs ranging from youth sports in San Antonio to health fairs in
 the Greater Houston area to comprehensive college planning services
 for Dallas students facing significant barriers to the pursuit of
 higher education; reflecting the company's determination to
 alleviate hunger, Walmart distributed enough groceries to Texas
 food banks to prepare some 36 million meals; and
 WHEREAS, The exceptional generosity of Walmart and the
 Walmart Foundation continues to change countless lives for the
 better and to have a positive impact in countless communities
 throughout the Lone Star State and across the country; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
 Legislature hereby commend Walmart and the Walmart Foundation for
 their far-reaching philanthropy and extend to them sincere
 appreciation for their commitment to alleviating want and creating
 greater opportunity for all Americans; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
 for Walmart and the Walmart Foundation as an expression of high
 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
