 R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Panhandle Herald celebrated its 125th
 anniversary in 2012; and
WHEREAS, The oldest newspaper in continuous operation in the
Texas Panhandle and one of the region's longest-surviving
businesses, the Herald published its first edition on July 22,
1887; the weekly publication was founded by Henry Harold Brookes,
an Englishman and a former Episcopal missionary, who had given up
his pastorate in Houston after discovering that he could reach a
wider audience as an editor than as a preacher; and
WHEREAS, After settling in the town of Panhandle, Mr. Brookes
built the Herald's original wooden press himself and initially
lived and worked out of a tent, despite the extremes of the local
climate; he was succeeded by a number of other proprietors during
the paper's first decades, among them Lee Satterwhite, a future
speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, John L. Nunn, a
utilities magnate as well as a newspaper owner, and
 David M. Warren,
a newspaperman who later served on The University of Texas Board of
 Regents; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Herald is owned and published by Shaun
and Frank Wink, with Shaun also serving as editor in chief; now
available online as well as in a newsprint edition, the paper has
kept pace with the rapid changes in media technology, yet it
continues to fulfill its traditional mission of strengthening the
bonds of community through its dedicated coverage of news and
 upcoming events; and
WHEREAS, Local newspapers are a vital and valued part of
their readers' lives, and throughout a rich history that has
spanned more than 12 decades, the Panhandle Herald has done an
outstanding job of keeping the residents of Carson County informed
and enlightened; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of the
Panhandle Herald and extend to all those associated with this
 venerable publication sincere best wishes for continued success;
 and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Panhandle Herald as an expression of high regard by
 the Texas House of Representatives.
