H.R. No. 336 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Dr. Jesus H. Chavez, the widely esteemed superintendent of the Round Rock Independent School District, has announced his plans to retire from a 34-year career in education on December 31, 2013; and WHEREAS, In his capacity as Round Rock ISD superintendent, this exceptional administrator oversees activities at 46 elementary, middle, and high school campuses and works tirelessly to ensure the best possible instruction and resources for the students; during his tenure at the helm of the district, voters in Round Rock have approved more than $560 million in bonds to finance school construction and infrastructure improvements, student achievement has increased, and district staff have garnered numerous state and national awards; and WHEREAS, Dr. Chavez has been instrumental in expanding the involvement of outside groups in the educational process; under his thoughtful guidance, the district has collaborated with business and community volunteers to provide mentors and role models for students as they explore professions, pursue advanced certifications, and consider university choices; and WHEREAS, An alumnus of Texas Southmost College, Dr. Chavez also attended Pan American University-Brownsville, where he received his master's degree, and The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his bachelor's and doctoral degrees; he began his career as a teacher in Brownsville in 1979 before taking an administrative post with the Round Rock ISD in 1985; he left Central Texas for a period of years to fill the top jobs at the Harlingen CISD and the Corpus Christi ISD before returning in 2006 to assume the office of Round Rock superintendent; and WHEREAS, Admired and respected by his peers, he was recognized for his achievements in 2009 with the Education Service Center Region 13 Superintendent of the Year award and was among the five finalists for Texas Superintendent of the Year; he was presented with his second ESC Region 13 Superintendent of the Year award in 2011; and WHEREAS, The people of Round Rock have gained immeasurably from Dr. Chavez's leadership, balanced approach to learning, deep experience, and passionate commitment to schoolchildren, and it is indeed a pleasure to join in recognizing his exceptional service to the cause of education in the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby commend Dr. Jesus H. Chavez for his achievements as superintendent of the Round Rock Independent School District and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Chavez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
