H.R. No. 616 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jeffery Musgrave of Austin rendered exceptional service to his country while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Wardak Province, Afghanistan; and WHEREAS, A member of the 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group, Staff Sergeant Musgrave was returning to camp following a mission on May 17, 2010, when he and his task unit came under enemy fire during a pouring rainstorm; in the first moments of the engagement, Staff Sergeant Musgrave was shot three times through his left arm, and yet he continued to move about and return fire; and WHEREAS, After emptying the clip of his M4 assault rifle, Staff Sergeant Musgrave broke cover and took up a comrade's weapon to continue shooting; though bleeding profusely, he exposed himself to enemy fire two more times before receiving treatment from a medic, and he then reentered the fight, maneuvering 300 meters under fire to help two other members of his team outflank and kill two enemy fighters; and WHEREAS, Meanwhile, the rain had made the road treacherous, and when the unit tried to leave, its vehicle got stuck in the mud; with only one good arm, Staff Sergeant Musgrave jumped back into the fight once again and maintained a defensive perimeter until the vehicle was freed; and WHEREAS, For his actions that day and for the wounds he received, Staff Sergeant Musgrave was presented with the Bronze Star with Valor Device, the fourth-highest award for gallantry in combat, as well as with the Purple Heart at a ceremony in Stuttgart, Germany, on December 6, 2011; and WHEREAS, A native of Georgetown, Staff Sergeant Musgrave continues to serve with the Texas National Guard, and during the 83rd Texas Legislature, he is working as an intern in the Senate Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Committee; he is also taking classes at Austin Community College with the ultimate goal of attending medical school; and WHEREAS, Exemplifying the highest ideals of the U.S. armed forces, Jeffery Musgrave inspires others with his fortitude, tenacity, and courage, and it is indeed a pleasure to recognize him for his service to his nation and for his heroism under fire; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby commend U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jeffery Musgrave for his dedication and bravery and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Staff Sergeant Musgrave as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
