H.R. No. 802 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Citizens of Bedford are observing the 60th anniversary of the incorporation of their community in 2013; and WHEREAS, Situated northeast of Fort Worth, this Tarrant County city was settled in the late 1840s; the town grew in the 1870s, when Weldon Bobo came to the area and built a general store and gristmill to serve area farmers; residents agreed to name the community Bedford, after the county in Tennessee from which many of them had come; and WHEREAS, The area's rapid growth slowed in the early 1900s, following the construction of rail lines along a new U.S. highway that bypassed the city, but resumed during World War II with the construction of nearby military bases and defense plants; in 1953, Bedford was incorporated by a vote of its citizens; and WHEREAS, Today, the city offers a central location in the heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex; residents and visitors alike enjoy such attractions as the Bedford Blues & BBQ Festival, Splash Aquatics Park, and the annual Independence Day Celebration, which boasts one of the largest fireworks displays in the area; the town is also home to the Old Bedford School, a beautifully restored community center where many of Bedford's early residents laid the groundwork for their education; and WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich and colorful history as they work together to build a bright future, the people of Bedford may take justifiable pride in the important role their city continues to play in the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 60th anniversary of the incorporation of Bedford and extend to the city's residents sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable celebration.
