 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, A number of elected officials, professional
 athletes, and other public figures are gathering in Austin to
 celebrate Texas Bow Tie Day at the State Capitol, and in so doing,
 they are supporting a worthy cause; and
 WHEREAS, This notable occasion highlights the positive
 impact of bipartisan collaboration while raising funds to help
 children with special needs; Texas Bow Tie Day is sponsored by
 Senator Eddie Lucio, Commissioner Michael Williams of the Texas
 Education Agency, and Commissioner Rolando Pablos of the Public
 Utility Commission of Texas; and
 WHEREAS, The benefit traces its roots to a Wednesday two
 decades ago, when Senator Lucio was complimented on the bow tie he
 was wearing by Senator Florence Shapiro; thereafter, Senator Lucio
 has observed "Bow Tie Wednesday" each week during session, and his
 fondness for this distinctive accessory has evolved into an annual
 charitable event; and
 WHEREAS, Proceeds from Texas Bow Tie Day 2013 are being
 donated to Maggie's Hope, which provides financial assistance to
 families of children with autism and Down syndrome; among the
 individuals participating in the fund-raising initiative are
 Representative Eddie Lucio III, Representative Larry Gonzales,
 retired NFL quarterback Jeff Blake, former Longhorn baseball player
 and World Series champion Greg Swindell, retired San Antonio Spurs
 forward Bruce Bowen, and fashion designer Ross Bennett; and
 WHEREAS, To commemorate the collaborative theme of the day, a
 special tie has been designed by Bow Ties for a Cause, a charity
 founded by former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Dhani Jones; the
 purple tie designed for Texas Bow Tie Day symbolically combines the
 red and blue colors associated with the nation's major political
 parties to signify bipartisanship; and
 WHEREAS, Texas Bow Tie Day celebrates the importance of
 collaboration and cooperation in service of the greater good, and
 this worthwhile endeavor is indeed deserving of recognition; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
 Legislature hereby recognize Texas Bow Tie Day at the State Capitol
 and extend sincere best wishes to all those who are participating
 for great success with this significant event.
