 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Members of the East Texas Medical Center Athens
 Auxiliary celebrated the 52nd anniversary of the group's founding
 on September 28, 2012; and
 WHEREAS, The auxiliary was established by the Reverend Gordon
 Alexander and his wife, Inez, in 1960; over the years, the
 organization has steadily grown, and today it consists of
 approximately 77 men and women, many of whom volunteer for 20 or
 more hours per week; in 2011 alone, these caring individuals logged
 over 29,000 hours of service; and
 WHEREAS, Dedicated to improving the experience of patients,
 supporting hospital staff, and easing the burden on families,
 auxiliary volunteers work wherever they are needed; they provide
 directions to patients and well-wishers from their post at the
 front desk, keep family and friends informed about loved ones who
 are in surgery, deliver flowers, mail, and menus, and wheel
 patients to their vehicles following their release; and
 WHEREAS, In addition to carrying out their day-to-day duties,
 members raise money to help pay for hospital equipment and
 amenities; through gift shop sales, special fund-raisers, and
 donations from the local community, they have provided items
 ranging from children's toys and televisions to glider rockers,
 incubators, and chair-beds; moreover, the auxiliary has awarded
 thousands of dollars in scholarships to nursing students; and
 WHEREAS, Volunteers also play an active role in the wider
 community, helping at local flu shot clinics, assisting with bone
 marrow and similar drives, and speaking to local organizations on
 relevant issues; committed to supporting the armed forces as well,
 they spearheaded a "Treats for Troops" event in 2007, and since then
 they have sent countless care packages to American service members
 overseas; and
 WHEREAS, For more than five decades, the ETMC Athens
 Auxiliary has been a boon of immeasurable value for staff and
 patients alike, and the outstanding efforts of its members, both
 past and present, are indeed worthy of commendation; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
 Legislature hereby commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the East
 Texas Medical Center Athens Auxiliary and extend to all those
 associated with the organization sincere appreciation for their
 vital contributions; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for the auxiliary as an expression of high regard by the
 Texas House of Representatives.
