66 AN ACT
77 relating to providing information to entering undergraduate
88 students at certain general academic teaching institutions to
99 promote timely graduation.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 51, Education Code, is
1212 amended by adding Section 51.9195 to read as follows:
1313 Sec. 51.9195. INFORMATION FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
1414 REGARDING BENEFITS OF TIMELY GRADUATION. (a) In this section,
1515 "general academic teaching institution" and "public state college"
1616 have the meanings assigned by Section 61.003.
1717 (b) This section applies only to a general academic teaching
1818 institution other than a public state college.
1919 (c) An institution to which this section applies shall
2020 provide to each first-time entering undergraduate student,
2121 including each undergraduate student who transfers to the
2222 institution, information in electronic or paper format that
2323 includes, based on a reasonable projection by the institution using
2424 the most recently available data:
2525 (1) a comparison of the average total amounts of
2626 tuition and fees paid by a full-time student who graduates from the
2727 institution in the following number of academic years:
2828 (A) four years;
2929 (B) five years; and
3030 (C) six years; and
3131 (2) an estimate of the average earnings lost by a
3232 recent graduate of the institution as a result of graduating after
3333 five or six years instead of four years.
3434 (d) An institution to which this section applies shall
3535 include with the information provided to a student under Subsection
3636 (c):
3737 (1) a list of actions that the student can take to
3838 facilitate graduating from the institution in a timely manner; and
3939 (2) contact information for available academic,
4040 career, and other related support services at the institution to
4141 assist the student in that effort.
4242 (e) An institution to which this section applies may satisfy
4343 the requirements of Subsections (c)(1) and (2) with regard to a
4444 student by providing the student with information that is more
4545 specific than the information described by those subdivisions.
4646 SECTION 2. Section 51.9195, Education Code, as added by
4747 this Act, applies beginning with undergraduate students who
4848 initially enroll in a general academic teaching institution for the
4949 2014 fall semester.
5050 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2013.
