6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Walking is an easy and effective form of exercise |

7 | 7 | | and can play an important role in a daily health regimen of diet and |
---|
8 | 8 | | exercise; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Obesity has become a serious health problem in Texas |
---|
10 | 10 | | and across the nation, partially due to a lack of exercise; if every |
---|
11 | 11 | | person walked for at least 30 minutes each day, the savings in |
---|
12 | 12 | | health care costs would be substantial; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The City of Canton in Van Zandt County is the home of |
---|
14 | 14 | | First Monday Trade Days, an event which draws about 180,000 |
---|
15 | 15 | | visitors to the city each month; the average person attending First |
---|
16 | 16 | | Monday walks at least a mile and a half while browsing on the |
---|
17 | 17 | | 350-acre grounds; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, City leaders have also established a monthly mayor's |
---|
19 | 19 | | walk at Cherry Creek Park; people of all ages are encouraged to take |
---|
20 | 20 | | part in this healthful activity; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The people of Canton have demonstrated initiative |
---|
22 | 22 | | and foresight in taking the matter of public health into their own |
---|
23 | 23 | | hands, and it is truly fitting that the city be recognized as the |
---|
24 | 24 | | Walking Capital of Texas; now, therefore, be it |
---|
25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the 83rd Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
26 | 26 | | hereby declare the City of Canton to be the Walking Capital of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Texas; and, be it further |
---|
28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared in honor |
---|
29 | 29 | | of the City of Canton. |
