55 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Walking is an easy and effective form of exercise
77 and can play an important role in a daily health regimen of diet and
88 exercise; and
99 WHEREAS, Obesity has become a serious health problem in Texas
1010 and across the nation, partially due to a lack of exercise; if every
1111 person walked for at least 30 minutes each day, the savings in
1212 health care costs would be substantial; and
1313 WHEREAS, The City of Canton in Van Zandt County is the home of
1414 First Monday Trade Days, an event which draws about 180,000
1515 visitors to the city each month; the average person attending First
1616 Monday walks at least a mile and a half while browsing on the
1717 350-acre grounds; and
1818 WHEREAS, City leaders have also established a monthly mayor's
1919 walk at Cherry Creek Park; people of all ages are encouraged to take
2020 part in this healthful activity; and
2121 WHEREAS, The people of Canton have demonstrated initiative
2222 and foresight in taking the matter of public health into their own
2323 hands, and it is truly fitting that the city be recognized as the
2424 Walking Capital of Texas; now, therefore, be it
2525 RESOLVED, That the 83rd Legislature of the State of Texas
2626 hereby declare the City of Canton to be the Walking Capital of
2727 Texas; and, be it further
2828 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared in honor
2929 of the City of Canton.
