SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1051 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Donald L. Smithers, who is retiring as District One council member after many years of exceptional service to the people of Sugar Land; and WHEREAS, Mr. Smithers began his career on the city council as District One representative in 1997; he served until 2003, during which time he was mayor pro tem for three years, and he returned to the council in 2009; and WHEREAS, A veteran of the United States Air Force and the Texas Air National Guard, Mr. Smithers played an important role in the planning and implementation of numerous projects that were instrumental in the growth and prosperity of the city, including the Town Square project, the renovation of the Imperial Park Softball Complex, planning for a new City Hall, and the extension and improvement of numerous area roads; and WHEREAS, His work in the community also includes service as a founding member and director of the Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation, president of the Rotary Club, and life member of the Fort Bend County Fair Association; and WHEREAS, An exemplary public servant, he is respected and admired by his fellow council members and his constituents, and his presence on the Sugar Land City Council will be greatly missed; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby commend Donald L. Smithers on his exceptional service to the people of Sugar Land and extend to him best wishes for continued success in all his endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
