SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 43 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize February 6 and 7, 2013, as Palestine Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, The seat of Anderson County, Palestine was founded in March of 1846, a few months after Texas was admitted to the United States in December of 1845; and WHEREAS, Palestine was largely an agrarian community until 1872, when the International and Great Northern Railroad was founded and established its headquarters in the city; Palestine then grew rapidly throughout the 19th century and early 20th century; and WHEREAS, A mecca of historic resources, Palestine has over 1,800 historic houses and buildings, most of which are located in the four National Register Historic Districts and three local Palestine Historic Districts; and WHEREAS, Noted for its exceptional success in preserving its historical integrity, Palestine is a Texas Main Street City, a National Main Street City, and a Preserve America City; and WHEREAS, The Texas Historical Commission, the City of Palestine, the Palestine Economic Development Corporation, and the citizens, businesses, and civic organizations of Palestine deserve recognition for preserving the city's rich past and for retaining the charm the city offers residents and visitors today; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby express appreciation to the citizens of Palestine for their contributions to our state and extend best wishes for the future to all who are celebrating Palestine Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of the City of Palestine.
