SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 436
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Tony Harper for his outstanding 45-year career as a
high school coach; and
WHEREAS, Coach Harper has a track record of victories and
successes at high schools across El Paso and is the current head
coach at Montwood High School; named Coach of the Year by the
University Interscholastic League in 2012, he was recently
honored again at the state basketball tournament for having won
more than 900 varsity games in his career; as such, he is the
first in wins among active coaches in Texas and the fourth in wins
among active coaches in the United States; Coach Harper is a
member of the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Tony Harper was born and raised in El Paso; after
lettering in basketball and baseball at Austin High School, he
attended Texas Western College, where he played for Coach Don
Haskins; and
WHEREAS, Since he began his coaching career, he has led
teams to 15 district championships, nine bi-district wins, seven
regional tournament appearances, and one elite eight; many of his
athletes have gone on to play college basketball and to become
coaches themselves; and
WHEREAS, This legendary coach is an outstanding role model
to young athletes, and he is a shining example of excellence in
the field of varsity sports; his contributions to high school
sports in El Paso and to the entire state are deserving of praise
and recognition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That Senate of the State of Texas,
83rd Legislature, hereby commend Montwood High School head coach
Tony Harper for his exceptional achievements during his 45-year
coaching career and extend to him best wishes for the future;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
Coach Harper as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
